Meet Timo, exhibit A on why the church is indeed dying, and on how to completely miss the point of an article. Unless of course his argument is that Jesus was a wimp and prayers are supposed to be weak and nobody is supposed to be challenged at church...

Jesus met people where the were, and challenged them to be what they were made to be. Making church relevant to those who currently don't darken the doors of a church isn't a bad thing. Challenging those that come to be more than they could possibly be on their own isn't a bad thing either. In fact, both are demanded of the Church.

Hey Timo that's great that you've pointed out the flaws, but what is your alternative? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Ash, I have visited hundreds of churches in every denomination across America conducting family events. Churches struggle to reach men.

Timo, did you read the article? The point is not that we have to do things to attract men but that we shouldn't do things that repel men.

Jesus didn't preach ecclesiology, obviously. What He did preach was a hardcore message on their terms. He was inclusive of women and children, too. Jesus was harsh when necessary, and gentle as much as possible (compare his treatment of the woman caught in adultery, to the Canaanite woman of Mat. 15).

I think there's a misconception that churches shouldn't be "seeker friendly" or shouldn't try to "entertain." There should be a caveat among pastors that, if you "entertain" your people, you MUST challenge them. We should always try to bring people up to the next level from where they're at. Too many pastors are soft on their congregants because they fear losing them. They fear being labeled a homophobe by taking a Biblical stance against homosexuality. They fear being fired when holding their congregants to moral standards with regard to cohabitation and porn addiction. But the opposite always takes place, if you do it the right way. If you model the harshness of Christ with the Canaanite woman. He set the bait with a challenge, and she took it - and as a reward for her response to his challenge, she received her miracle. Only when we challenge our members, especially the men, do we find that they not only find themselves up to the challenge, but respond with zeal and abandon. Attractional isn't a naughty word, it's a good word. Attract men with manly stuff, then challenge them, and then they'll find out they were Biblically mandated to not just be involved, but lead.

Roger, you're dead on. I don't think a church should be aimed at men 100%, but it should be an appealing place for all people, because the gospel appeals to all. Good work.

I think that while you may have a point for a few men, it's not really a massive issue. most of the men who go to churches are usually finding themselves in positions of ministry whether that be officially (eg pastor, lay minister, worship leader etc) or unofficially (eg helping out the op shop). i'm not saying your post doesn't have a point but at the same time it doesn't really reflect many men or even many churches really, just a few. you might want to broaden your topic next time.

This article demonstrates a lack of understanding of ecclesiology. Men fail to understand the doctrine of the church. They lack conviction regarding their biblically mandated involvement in the church, and are condemning their sons to follow their example. The idea that it is the church's job to captivate, entertain, challenge, and attract the Christian male is asinine. This article argues that, the church should challenge ME. The church should look like ME (masculinity) the church should Pray more like ME. The church should dress to make ME comfy. The church should depict Jesus in a way that appeals to ME. That is if the church wants to be appealing to ME. After all it's all about...

I think you alluded to this in your third point, but do you think most Christians stay out of polictics because it feels like a losing battle? I think this is a sad state of America when American citizens feel like their voices cannot make a difference, but it seems to be felt in some folks I've talked to.
